How to setup categories

Categories provide away to arrange catalog items into meaningful groups for reporting and management. A category is specified for each catalog item. For example, the catalog may have several items that are causal wear. Each item has an item id and description, but all items are assigned to category casual wear. Many screens provide a search field for category. Selecting the casual wear category list all catalog items within that category. Additionally, many reports group catalog items by category.

Each category can be assigned to a major category. For example, the casual wear category could be assigned to a major category of *Clothing. Then selecting *Clothing in screen search field lists all clothing items including casual wear.

A image or photograph for each category can be stored in the database by clicking the image field at upper right of screen and selecting an image. This can be used in the web store application.

Entering and editing category

To enter a category, click the new button and enter in the category field. A code or short identifier can be entered in the Category Code field if desired. The information entered is then displayed in the browser on the left.

To edit a category, select the item in the browser on the left and make changes in the fields on the right.

Click the save button before exiting this screen.

Entering a category with sub categories

This screen shows a major category *Clothing that has several sub categories. The major category is entered as shown on the previous screen. Placing an asterisk (*) at the beginning of major categories insures that all major categories are listed at the beginning of the browser list when the list is sorted (click on column name).

Entering a sub category

To enter sub categories, click the new button, select the major category and then enter the category and the optional category code. Repeat to enter all sub categories. When done, click the save button.

After sub categories are entered, selecting a major category in the left hand list shows the major category and all sub categories as shown on the previous screen.
